Real Healthcare Reform

A Pound of Cure?

With the heated debate about health care, many ideas are being thrown around to make the cost of health care more affordable. We've probably all heard the old saying about an ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure. The real question: Is it really true, or is it just an old wives tale? I believe that to be an inaccurate statement. It's probably more like an ounce of prevention to ten pounds of cure; maybe more.

Think of it in terms of other things we maintain; for instance; our cars. An oil change can cost anywhere from $15 to $20 for the do-it-your-selfer to $25-$35 to have a shop preform the service. Considering that the cost of a typical car engine would range from $1,500 to $4,000 or more; it seems that the prevention would save more than 100% of the cost of cure. How much more important is our health?

You Are What You Eat

If this is true (and it is), then America is in trouble! The typical American diet is high in calories and saturated fat; full of processed and chemically altered foods; and almost completely void of any of the real nutrients required to maintain a healthy body. Returning to the car analogy; if you were to work hard, save your money long enough to purchase a brand new Mercedes Benz CLS63 AMG, what would be your response if I were to walk up and dump sand into the fuel tank? And yet, we think nothing of our bodies as we do similar damage by our daily diet.

Rusting On the Inside

Science tells us that nearly every ailment that we suffer from can be traced back to cellular inflammation. Cellular inflammation is known to be caused by the oxidation process in our cells. (Think of an old car rusting, it's the same basic concept) This oxidation can only be overcome by antioxidants. While our bodies produce some antioxidants; the oxidative stress of our environment is much too great for our bodies to fight alone. This is why we are told by the FDA that we should consume 7-9 servings of fruits and vegetables each day; as the only place to get the antioxidants we need is from plants.

It is stated that we spend the first half of our lives trading our health for welath, only to spend the second half trading our wealth to restore our health.
